| International Symposium on Nanotechnology
and Patenting, proceedings |
 |
Nanotechnology is considered to be one of
the key technologies of this century. Therefore, all leading
economies have embarked on investing in R&D thereof resulting
in an increasing number of nanotechnology patent applications.
This European platform for the exchange of information on
this emerging technology took place on 9 -10 November 2004
in The Hague. The event was jointly organised by The European
Patent Institute (epi), the Future Technologies Division
of the German Association of Engineers (VDI TZ), the Licensing
Executives Society (L.E.S.) and the EPO in order to allow
European patent professionals to meet with leading European
nanotechnology experts. This collection of contributions
informs about patenting of nanotechnology inventions and
gives the opportunity to share views on technical and ethical
implications pertaining to nanotechnology.

Hosted by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry
of Slovenia, the Slovenian IP Office and the EPO organised
a public symposium in Ljubljana from 6-8 October 2004. This
symposium was designed for IP managers and professionals
including management and staff of national IP offices. The
collection of contributions draws upon evaluation of patents,
innovation management, the impact of IP on economy, IP portofolios
as well as benchmarking of innovation. Additionally experiences
of patent protection in the industry were discussed.

| Public Symposium on innovation support
and Workshop on IP for SMEs, proceedings of seminar SE4/2004 |
 |
Both events were jointly implemented by the
Estonian Patent Office and the EPO and took place from 20
- 24 September 2004 in Tallinn. Presentations at the Symposium
dealt with the role of the European patent system in fostering
innovation amongst SMEs, governmental programmes for innovation
support, the importance of patent information, the role of
the patent attorney, enforcement issues and costs and benefits
of national as well as European patent protection. The workshop
focused on strategic management for SMEs, innovation support
at universities, IP marketing and evaluation and licensing
issues.

| Public Symposium on Patents, Designs,
Trademarks, Denominations of origin: Strategic tools for the
protection of products and processes in the food industry;
proceedings of seminar SE11/2004 |
 |
The Symposium showed that much has still
to be communicated in order to raise patent awareness in
a sector that, whilst being closely linked to tradition,
still seems to be highly innovative. Jointly organised by
the Italian Patent and Trademark Office, the Industrialists'
Association of Verona, the EPO and other partners, the event
took place in Verona from 28 - 29 June 2004. The Contributions
collected address the strategic importance of patents, trademarks
and denominations of origin for the management of innovative
food. A subsequent workshop dealt with search and examination
of European patent applications in the field of biotechnology,
in particular with documentation, classification, patentability
criteria, case law and claim-drafting. These contributions
are included, too.

| Symposium on “Managing Intellectual
Property Rights in a Knowledge-based Society” and Workshop
on “IP teaching and IP training materials”, proceedings |
 |
An international pool of eminent professionals
addresses the issue of how to provide the most appropriate
framework for making the Intellectual Property System effective
for the benefit of society. The contributions introduce the
most relevant developments in the patent system with regard
to the protection of new ideas, the economic value of patents
and the marketing of innovation. In the subsequent Workshop
on IP teaching and IP training materials, experts pave the
way for the creation of synergies in this crucial field,
elaborating on curriculum design for specific target groups
and addressing the evolution of e-learning and distance learning
into existing IP teaching networks.

| The European Patent System. Focus 2003: Research
and Development. Proceedings of Seminar 22/2003 |
 |
The management of intellectual property is of paramount importance,
not only for the right holders but also for society that is
in turn busy with solving the overall question of how to maximise
the benefits from the Intellectual Property system by creating
the most appropriate framework. By pointing out the possibilities
and advantages offered by the patent system to those who work
in R&D, contributions inform about existing programmes
to foster innovation at universities and research institutions.
IP for start-up businesses, licensing and technology transfer
issues as well as innovation management and assessment are
also addressed. |

| IP issues for government officials and information
administrators. Proceedings of Seminar 21/2003 |
 |
Practitioners in the field of IP, administrators, government
officials, researchers and information administrators shared
their ideas on ongoing developments. Contributions address
the necessary conditions for developing IP business, highlight
the impact of counterfeited goods on national economies, confront
the issue of assessment of patents and shed some light on public
awareness and tackles the issues of IP management, IP information
as well as its dissemination. |

| Proceedings of the International Forum on computer-related
and business model inventions |
 |
There is no doubt that information technology is one of the
most dynamic areas of innovation and has a substantial impact
on our life. Moving towards the digital age in a globalised
economy, the interdependence between intellectual property
and information technology constantly increases, as the already
existing ties grow stronger under the influence of the ongoing
evolution process in information technology. |

| Industrial property issues for governmental officials
and information administrators. Proceedings of the Seminar
21/2002 |
 |
Intellectual property (IP) has increasingly become both a
crucial and, therefore, highly debated issue in a globalising
economy. Taking the complexity of intellectual property into
account, the contributions went far beyond the technical issues.
The presentations deal with the economic value of IP rights
and the sensitive issue of public opinion together with political,
social, and ethical issues, such as biotechnology. Questions
of technology transfer, traditional knowledge, and better use
of IP systems for developing countries were addressed too. |
