International Symposium on Nanotechnology and Patenting, proceedings

Nanotechnology is considered to be one of the key technologies of this century. Therefore, all leading economies have embarked on investing in R&D thereof resulting in an increasing number of nanotechnology patent applications. This European platform for the exchange of information on this emerging technology took place on 9 -10 November 2004 in The Hague. The event was jointly organised by The European Patent Institute (epi), the Future Technologies Division of the German Association of Engineers (VDI TZ), the Licensing Executives Society (L.E.S.) and the EPO in order to allow European patent professionals to meet with leading European nanotechnology experts. This collection of contributions informs about patenting of nanotechnology inventions and gives the opportunity to share views on technical and ethical implications pertaining to nanotechnology.

Public Symposium on Patents, Designs, Trademarks, Denominations of origin: Strategic tools for the protection of products and processes in the food industry; proceedings of seminar SE11/2004

The Symposium showed that much has still to be communicated in order to raise patent awareness in a sector that, whilst being closely linked to tradition, still seems to be highly innovative. Jointly organised by the Italian Patent and Trademark Office, the Industrialists' Association of Verona, the EPO and other partners, the event took place in Verona from 28 - 29 June 2004. The Contributions collected address the strategic importance of patents, trademarks and denominations of origin for the management of innovative food. A subsequent workshop dealt with search and examination of European patent applications in the field of biotechnology, in particular with documentation, classification, patentability criteria, case law and claim-drafting. These contributions are included, too.

The European Patent System. Focus 2003: Research and Development. Proceedings of Seminar 22/2003
The management of intellectual property is of paramount importance, not only for the right holders but also for society that is in turn busy with solving the overall question of how to maximise the benefits from the Intellectual Property system by creating the most appropriate framework. By pointing out the possibilities and advantages offered by the patent system to those who work in R&D, contributions inform about existing programmes to foster innovation at universities and research institutions. IP for start-up businesses, licensing and technology transfer issues as well as innovation management and assessment are also addressed.

Industrial property issues for governmental officials and information administrators. Proceedings of the Seminar 21/2002
Intellectual property (IP) has increasingly become both a crucial and, therefore, highly debated issue in a globalising economy. Taking the complexity of intellectual property into account, the contributions went far beyond the technical issues. The presentations deal with the economic value of IP rights and the sensitive issue of public opinion together with political, social, and ethical issues, such as biotechnology. Questions of technology transfer, traditional knowledge, and better use of IP systems for developing countries were addressed too.
